Summary: One of the nicest tripods I've ever owned
Comment: I used to have a tripod that was more stable than this one - it had a couple features this one didn't have, like on that tripod you could screw the feet in and out to make points for outdoor shots while exposing rubber feet for indoor shots.

But, well, today's electronic cameras are lighter. The ability to make the feet into points was unimportant. And weight is important - I want a tripod that is light enough that I am going to carry it - not just think about how well it will work in my closet.

I like the ability to have two levels more - so that I can be sure that the camera is level with the horizon. It is cool that you can hang a weight on the center post - and also cool that you can invert the center post to go macro.

And, well, I really liked the ability to get the legs out at different distances from the center. I used to have to handle that by making the lengths different lengths, and this system will give me a way of working on uneven ground that allows me to spread the legs more, not less.

Now this is not a "panhead" so making movies with it is not such a good idea. But it will be a great tripod for my little high end point and shoot.

Summary: A great buy!
Comment: This tripod is not heavy because of its alloy construction, and its framework is very strong. It will not shift under normal use. It holds significant weight and is very easy to operate. You won't need to replace this tripod!

Summary: Great tripod for lifetime (possibly)
Comment: i bought this tripod just today from a local camera store. the rep showed an interesting feature of the legs. Each leg can be moved independent of the other legs up and down to increase the base of support. this can come very handy on uneven surfaces. havent tried it yet in real world situation, but might work well. Another big difference between the generic 40 $ tripod and this one is that the three legs are not connected to the center pole which means each leg can move independently. also to further increase the height of the tripod, the center pole can raised. u dont have to crank it up. all u have to do is unscrew and lift. the reason why it is important is that the crank handle is made of cheap plastic and can break (i know this cos the rep in the store found a broken piece of plastic handle identical to the crank handle on a different tripod. and lastly the ball mechanism is very smooth. but i think it can become loose with use and might need to be replaced. i will know only after i use it more as how long the ball mechanism lasts. for an amateur photographer like me, i thought this was a little expensive, but i justified the purchase hoping that it might be a lifetime purchase(with sparing use of the tripod) and dont have to keep replacing the cheaper 40 $ which might break. so all in all it feels like a well built sturdy tripod and worth the 160 $. so no more precarious positioning of the DSLR for group photos and hopefully some nice landscape pics. enjoy

Summary: Solid legs and head holds a D90 + 18-200 easily.
Comment: Yay Gold Box deals! Almost bought this at Fry's last weekend, held off because I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the money on taxes (Yay no Taxes online), and then saw this as a Gold Box item on Saturday night.

The legs are nice - easy to clamp and unclamp for height - and only 3 section, so it gets tall without getting unstable. The column is reversable, which is cool for close to the ground photography.

The ball head does not have a panning feature, so this may not be the best for panoramic shots, but it has NO issues whatsoever holding the camera at some weird angles with a heavy lens and body. Tightening the head is easy, untightening is a little more difficult.

Easily worth the money at full price, never mind half price!

Summary: Great starter tripod
Comment: This was my first real tripod. The legs are made of aluminum and the spider where the legs attach are made of a magnesium alloy which make it really steady. I'm giving it 4 stars because I think the ball head can be improved. The ball head will creep slightly on initial lock but you just need to focus higher to compensate for it. Other than that it's steady. If you want a ballhead that doesn't creep then expect to pay more than what this tripod cost just for the head alone. I've used my Canon 40D w/ grip 17-40L f4 lens and a Pentax iST DL w/ 70-210f4 lens with no major issues.
